this sweet path

I wish you could have been here with us yesterday. My beloved husband and I took the dogs for a long hike through the woods. Let me describe the fragrance to you. Imagine a mild breeze that changes direction as you move through it. One moment, the air is subtle and discreet like the scent of carnation petals, and then you turn and it’s rich, loud, and damp like the skins of crushed concord grapes, and then the smell of warm, dark earth rises and blends into the sweetness. The dust that rises from the trail smells like clay, but it’s overwhelmed by a scent as silky as cinnamon sugar on warm, buttery toast. And then the air changes again and you can smell the fresh delicate salt layer of the Sound. This part of the trail is only a couple of miles long according to my charity app, so I think next time we’ll make the loop twice, while the scent of summer lasts.
